Think for a moment. When you have a difficult situation or decision you are facing, who do you call?  Who is the first person you call?  Most people call someone they know and love dearly. I often think, who will be blunt and real with me? Who is a straight shooter? Who is going to tell it like it is whether I like it or not? Who is going to be the one to tell me it’s a terrible idea without sugar coating it?  This is the first person I want to talk to. Not someone who is going to tell me what I want to hear.

Let’s be honest, most of us are stubborn and set in our ways.  We don’t want to change. We don’t want to be challenged.  We don’t like criticism. Because of this, we put up guardrails in our lives and sometimes these guardrails are those “closest” to us that tell us what we want to hear and not what we need to hear. If we keep these unnecessary guardrails up, it locks us into following our own wisdom and not the Lord’s, or even wise counsel from other godly people.

Who’s advice and counsel are you listening to? First, we should align ourselves with the word of God and talk to Him about what we are facing.  Don’t look for ways around it or ways out of it.  Don’t look for scriptures to justify what you are doing. Justify scripture with how you live and how you seek advice and council. Don’t be stubborn and stuck in your own ways.  Listen to God and to the wise counsel He has put in your life.

““But my people would not listen to me. They kept doing whatever they wanted, following the stubborn desires of their evil hearts. They went backward instead of forward.”

‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭7:24‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Don’t just follow your ways.  Don’t just seek out the yes people in your life.  We need a healthy balance of yes AND no in our lives. I don’t want to be around a bunch of yes people. I want to be around a bunch of people who will tell me the truth even when it hurts but they do so in love. If we aren’t careful though we will end up like this:

““But no, my people wouldn’t listen. Israel did not want me around. So I let them follow their own stubborn desires, living according to their own ideas.”

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭81:11-12‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Today, seek wise counsel in all areas of your life so that you can also give wise counsel. Align your life with scripture and listen to men and women of God. Be real, Be you, Be wise, Be teachable.
